Sheffield City Council say the idea, suggested by a member of the public, could generate them up to 250,000

Sheffield City Council say they're considering starting up a lottery in the city to help them to generate money in the face of major cuts.
At a meeting at the Town Hall today they discussed the proposals for this year's budget. They said the idea, put forward by a member of the public, could be a way of getting extra income.

Councillor Bryan Lodge, deputy leader of the council, thinks its a great idea:

"There are examples of lotteries operating elsewhere up and down the country. This will allow us to generate some income which we can then use to help support some of the services out there.

"It's very early stages but some councils have raised up to £250,000 from using these lotteries over a couple of years. This is a good proposal, its come from a member of the public and this is why we've been asking for suggestions."

At the meeting they also said they'd be freezing council tax and pushing ahead with plans to go to fortnightly bin collections.
