Story Highlight
The Beatles legend’s molar goes under the hammer
One of John Lennon’s molar teeth sold for a whopping £19,500 at auction over the weekend.
The decayed molar, originally given by Lennon to his housekeeper Don Jarlett in the sixties, was bought by Canadian dentist Michael Zuk at Omega Auctions in Stockport on Saturday.
The item was part of an extensive collection of rock memorabilia owned by Creation Records founder Alan McGee that went under the hammer.
Speaking to the BBC, an ecstatic Mr Zuk said: “Once I heard it was up for sale I had to have it. Some people will think it’s gross, others will be fascinated by it.”
The dentist who has penned a book on celebrities’ teeth now plans to display the tooth in his Alberta surgery and take it on tours of dental schools.
Karen Fairweather from Omega Auctions, said of The Beatle's tooth: "It's rather gruesome, yellowy, browny with a cavity.
"John Lennon came back from the dentist and gave it to his housekeeper and said to dispose of it 'or better still give it to your daughter as a souvenir'."
Other items that were up for sale at the auction included a letter of thanks from Tony Blair, oil paintings by The Stone Roses’ John Squire and The Jesus & Mary Chain’s original signed contract.
